Steve has been a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, an organization comprised of the top family lawyers in the country, since 1994. He has been named as one of New York Magazine’s “Super Lawyers” since 2007 and one of the Best Lawyers in the New York Metropolitan Area. Steve served on the Interdisciplinary Forum on Mental Health and Family Law. He is an experienced and highly regarded trial attorney and is also a trained mediator and has been chosen by his colleagues to mediate and arbitrate issues in their cases.
Admitted to the bar in 1981, Steve has limited his practice to matrimonial and family law since that time. He has extensive experience in all phases of matrimonial practice, including divorce, child custody, child support, equitable distribution, and pre and post marital agreements. Steve has been recognized by judges and colleagues as one of the top matrimonial lawyers in New York.
Steve’s approach to each case is to be as planful as possible. “There is a lot about a divorce you can’t control, so it’s critical to properly manage everything you can control.” Along with the client, he formulates a strategy and goals at the outset of each case and directs his efforts at realizing that goal by following through on the plan. His clients come almost exclusively from referrals by previous clients and often from the spouse’s of his former clients, or their attorneys. Steve is committed to working with and fighting for his clients in and out of court and is a relentless advocate.
In founding Garr Silpe, P.C. with his longtime friend and colleague, Ira Garr, Steve brings his breadth of experience to all aspects of their family law practice with the goal of achieving the best resolution of the problems of each individual client.
Steve has lectured on matrimonial and family law issues. He is married, lives in Westchester, NY, has three children, and is an avid cyclist, snowboarder and golfer.
